ASE to Open Cape Town Campus

The Johannesburg-based Academy of Sound Engineering (ASE) has expanded its offering to Cape Town. With the purchase of what was previously Spaced Out Studios near the Good Hope Centre, it is scheduled to open in 2016.

ASE’s director, Nick Matzukis said that the decision to open in Cape Town has been on the cards for a number of years. “We were waiting for the ideal location that would be centrally situated, convenient for students and provide the necessary infrastructure to offer state-of-the-art technology.

“We intend to roll out short-courses during the second semester this year and offer the Diploma and Degree qualifications next year, when all the renovations have been completed,” he says.

Well-known musician and sound engineer, Keith Farquharson, has been appointed managing director. Equally at home in the studio or at a live concert, Keith has been Freshlyground’s sound engineer for the last eight years and won a SAMA in 2011 for Best Engineer for their Radio Africa album.

“We are delighted to have Keith on board,” says Matzukis. “Our students will have the opportunity to learn from a top engineer with a lifetime’s experience in the music mixing business.”

The Academy of Sound Engineering is the first tertiary education provider in South Africa to offer a three year B.Sc. Degree in Sound Engineering Technology which will now be available to students in Cape Town.
